One of Many Baltimores
Ever since moving from Washington DC to Baltimore, Matthew had an interest in photographing the neighborhoods of Baltimore because he always found the differences in neighborhoods to be, in many ways, the visual representation of many of the problems going on in Baltimore. Moreover, he felt that recording these neighborhoods, before gentrification or before the history of these neighborhoods is white washed was extremely important.
While going to these places he was also mindful of the fact that he doesn't live in these places, and just because he has the privilege of owning a camera doesn’t mean that he gets to write the local people’s story for them.
Therefore, most importantly to Matthew, he wants to give people of this community the ability to tell their story to an audience. For this very reason, he intereviewed someone from Druid Heights, my friend Shawn, to give the full experience of being in this neghborhood, but also so he can tell his story.
